Gong Market / Used Paiste 50" Symphonic
« on: October 18, 2017, 03:50:53 AM »
Not my gong and not my store and I haven't heard or played it but I thought someone here might be interested? $7999 (plus shipping if needed, it's in Bellevue WA USA, Seattle area)

I look at the add occasionally, but there is no way I can afford it at the moment and I keep hoping someone will buy it so I can forget about it! ;-)

Did you end up getting this gong, Paul?

Yes, quite a good deal on those, thanks again!

OK, phase 2 is finally done! I have the left and right wings completed and the gongs mounted. I should have gone to bed hours ago but I was so close to finishing I pushed on through.  ;D

The wings open and close smoothly and it's about 20" or or so deep when fully folded closed.

Thanks Paul! I have some similar clamps, sort of, that I use for my lighting (Manfrotto Super Clamps, see attached pic) and they would be a lot nicer but I have a big pile of the other cheaper truss clamps I'm using for the gongs and I'll finish off the setup with them and see how well they hold up.

Did you get yours yet, Paul? I got mine today and I think they are quite nice! Nicely weighted and good for striking medium to largish gongs and for rolling on large gongs.  I've only tried them for a minute so we'll see over time if my opinion changes. ;) Thanks again for the hot tip!  8)

Thanks PipeGong!  8)

The pipe is 3/4" and there is a total of 24 screws into the floor and wall so I doubt it could ever fall. The jury is still out on those clamps I used to hang the gongs with though. I think they will be OK but I keep thinking there may be something better?

Phase 1 complete!  :)

So after many years of deciding how to hang a majority of my gongs in my little studio I finally decided about a year ago to make a big pipe structure where my big  modular synth used to sit and I've finally committed to actually doing it!  ;D

The main part is done and supports the 44" chau and 36" wind gongs. The next step will be to make the two movable side wings that will hold some of the 20" through 28" gongs. And the final step will be to find places for as many of the 15" and smaller gongs as possible.

Excellent PipeGong! No problem with the response time, I was just starting to worry that you and your wife might have gotten trapped underneath it when trying to move it or something! ;-)

Side Note: This may be a well known technique but I've found with my "little" 44 inch :D chau that the deepest hammer dents can generate some very focused tones. If I prime it a little with a large mallet and then use a friction mallet to make many short strokes (typically 5 to 20) in the dent area I can get a high pitched resonance going, sometimes sounding like PA feedback or similar. I'll try to make a decent demo video of this at some point. Try it with your 52", I bet it has MANY secret sounds hiding within it just waiting to be coaxed out!

Thanks for the heads up, Paul! Even though I think I have enough mallets, I couldn't resist the price and ordered a pair also.

Wow, that's great! I never considered trying to contact an Asian gong maker directly since I'd have no idea where to start and I don't speak the language etc.

The shipping weight on my 44" chau from Steve Weiss was 133 pounds and over 70 pounds of that was the shipping crate so maybe yours is packaged with less heavy materials?

 :o WOW, awesome!!!  8)

If you got it from a dealer, who was it and how much is the shipping weight?
